Following Sarah’s extensive world tour in 2013, her lifelong dream of travelling to space will finally become reality. After months of rigorous training, Sarah will journey via Soyuz rocket to the International Space Station! Sarah is passionate to use her journey as a force for good and has partnered with UNESCO to achieve this dream too. In her role as a UNESCO Artist for Peace, Sarah hopes to encourage her fans to be Dreamchasers for their own goals – and for our shared goal of a sustainable future.
During 8 -10 days at the International Space Station, Sarah will see Earth from afar. The view from space of our unique blue planet shows one perfect sphere, without boundaries. As 7 billion of us swells to 9 billion in our lifetime, we will need to change the way we live in the world, aware of our limited resources, uniting with each other and with nature.
Being a Dreamchaser means finding ways to accomplish your personal goals, but also to achieve common goals. Sarah shares UNESCO’s vision of a world where everyone has the opportunity to achieve, where there are sufficient resources to sustain life and where humans flourish in harmony with nature.
Conservation and Sustainable Living in Action!
Just as travellers in space need to use their limited resources like food, water and oxygen with enough care to ensure they will last the duration of the journey, we too depend on Earth’s limited resources, for now and with respect for the needs of future generations. In addition to the celebrated beauty of well-known World Heritage sites UNESCO supports networks of Biosphere Reserves and Geoparks Network which provide living demonstrations of communities both enjoying vibrant livelihoods and using resources with respect for their long-term preservation or regeneration, and the dynamic power of the Earth. These sites are fantastic examples of how scientific learning and human ingenuity combine to be able to live in harmony with our surroundings. They are great examples of sustainable living that other communities can apply to their own circumstances.
Educating girls and women makes communities sustainable
Women and girls make up half the Earth’s population. The gender imbalance in scientific fields means we’re missing out on half the world’s creativity. Through Sarah’s Galactic Unite Brightman STEM scholarship program, she is helping to advance the role of women in science, in keeping with UNESCO’s work across the globe. But we need much more for us to be globally sustainable – environmentally, economically and socially.
UNESCO’s programs provide adults and young people with literacy and technical training. Women and girls empowered with skills become employees or small business owners and benefit their families, creating a ripple effect that transforms even the most disadvantaged communities.
